Reinvention of the Toilet

About 2.6 billion people worldwide either live with primitive toilets-- or don’t have them at all. The consequences of poor sanitation can be deadly, especially for children. There’s a new effort to improve these conditions in the developing world-- led by Microsoft’s Bill Gates. He’s called for a “reinvention’’ of the toilet, to make cleaner and cheaper devices. Turns out, a Colorado-based organization has been involved with this issue for a long time. The group is Water for People. CPR’s Pat Mack spoke with Steven Sugden, who’s in charge of the group’s sanitation program. He’s based in England.
