For the past several weeks, earthquakes and aftershocks have hit northern Malawi. A 6.0-magnitude quake in the Karonga district occurred this past Sunday. So far, no villages and urban areas where Water For People works have been affected.
However, Water For People–Malawi staff member Ephrone’s village have been severely damaged.
“My village is amongst the worst hit with buildings collapsing and people being shifted to safer areas. My kinsmen are sleeping outside for safety reasons,” Ephrone said. “The side wall of our own brick house in the village has collapsed. We will wait until the earthquakes and aftershocks cease before we rebuild it.”
AP News is reporting that more than 1100 homes have been destroyed by the quakes and another several thousand are damaged and may collapse.
