Water For People Expands in India

Our program in West Bengal, India has been a focal point of success. We've worked with partners and the government to create the Jalabandhu mobile mechanics program to ensure maintenance of water points is performed—and the program has proven successful in creating jobs as well. The school sanitation program empowers secondary-school girls to design their own bathrooms—they know what they need and what will keep them in school. Working with partners, we're supporting safe water and sanitation in 138 schools this year. And the best news, we're nearing full coverage in two blocks of South 24 Parganas—which means Everyone will soon have access to safe water.
Capitalizing on this success, the Water For People–India staff is preparing to expand programs into the state of Bihar. To begin, the team is evaluating the needs and will soon select one district to support full water and sanitation coverage with the goal of Everyone having access.
In addition, Water For People–India is launching a pilot peri-urban (the area just outside the city) sanitation and hygiene program in Kolkata and possibly another city.
What do you think?

It is an opportunity for the poor people of India who are still struggling for a drop of clean water. Small girls are traveling kilometers everyday to fetch drinking water. In a tribal block of Trichy, Tamilnadu, we have came across 13 deaths in last rainy season due to Diarrhea.I wish 'Water for People' initiative in the area to bring about a real transformation in the life of the tribal.
Good work done in Sundarban

your effort in India is very good step. because, it is very difficult to improve sanitation situation in Indian villages/ communities despite there is a lot of progress in infrastructures and industrial sectors.
Dear Ms. Lambert, your short details shows a lot model work like involving girls in designing their bathrooms. it is really a participatory approach in the community development. thanks
