Uganda Initiatives
As the youngest Water For People program in Africa, Water For People–Uganda has been exploring different approaches to supporting sustainable water and sanitation systems. A critical aspect of the program is examining and working to establish different management models so that systems are well maintained and communities are provided with reliable, uninterrupted access to safe drinking water. Water For People–Uganda is also promoting a market-based approach to sanitation and is investigating opportunities for local sanitation entrepreneurs. Water For People–Uganda plans to test innovative models for piloting both water and sanitation businesses.
In 2010, Water For People–Uganda demonstrated different ecological sanitation solutions and is now monitoring these projects to better understand household needs and how to improve this approach. Staff is also undertaking market assessments of the regions to evaluate the potential for sanitation businesses. In addition, a Business Development Service provider has been hired in Uganda to provide mentoring and support to sanitation businesses and identify needs, opportunities, gaps, and constraints in potential sanitation markets and models.
