South America

High, dry, and thirsty

South America is home to the world’s highest waterfall, the largest river and rain forest, the longest mountain range, and the driest climate. The population of over 379 million exhibits a stark gap between rich and poor, mixing shacks and shantytowns with skyscrapers and luxury apartments. Throughout the continent, access to safe water and places to go to the bathroom are not consistently available. Despite the challenges of poor water supply and contamination, the potential is great to make significant change. Water For People served 6,266 safe water beneficiaries and 7,696 sanitation beneficiaries in 2009.
