REPORTS
Dominican Republic Conference on Water & Sanitation Report

Background
Although the Dominican Republic is often known for its beautiful all-inclusive resorts and famous baseball players, the reality is that the people of the Dominican Republic suffer from a lack of safe drinking water and basic sanitation services.

In 2007, the Water For People World Water Corps® completed a scoping study in the Dominican Republic and determined that there was need for Water For People’s involvement and recommended adding the country under Water For People’s Strategic Plan.

Water & Sanitation Conference
In April 2009, Water For People held a Water and Sanitation Conference to establish next steps of the program. The conference brought together over 15 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that presented some of the water and sanitation needs in the Dominican Republic and how Water For People and others can help address them. In response, Water For People awarded $24,000 to several presenting organizations to fund their work. In 2010, Water For People will continue to support the organizations that it is currently funding to improve access to safe water and sanitation.
