About the Position
Water For People is currently recruiting for the position of Chief Financial Officer. The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for all financial and fiscal management aspects of Water For People’s operations. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and serving as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the Chief Financial Officer will direct the financial and technological side of the organization.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:
FINANCIAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT:
Defines the organization’s financial strategy in three-year increments, manages financial reporting (revenue and expense), and communicates financial requirements and implications of business decisions to CEO and Board of Directors
Coordinates with Finance Committee/Treasurer and works with SLT on development of quarterly financial projections that are shared with the Board
Coordinates with Audit Committee and works with SLT and Board on development of audit/taxes and open risks from external audits
Manages cash flow to country programs and manages unrestricted cash reserves per the investment policy
Proactively conducts analyses to provide useful financial insights to the SLT to help make better decisions that facilitate executing Water For People’s business strategy through financial and management information analyses, reports, and recommendations
Drives the annual budget process with the SLT, monthly reporting, and quarterly forecasting; reports and oversees the variances by country and headquarter departments
Discusses and analyzes monthly financial results and quarterly forecasts with the SLT
Works with Country Directors and Regional Finance and Administration Managers to evaluate and analyze the quarterly forecasts versus actuals to show continuous improvement in ability to forecast over time; organizes Country Directors to report quarterly results to SLT and shares their insights and analyses of variances to plan
Partners with the Treasurer and the Board Finance and Investment Committee on budgets, analysis, and actions
Works closely with the Business Development team and Chief Development Officer to have accurate revenue forecasts and pipeline; includes revenue with expense to have complete financial picture delineated by restricted and unrestricted funding
Oversees the approval and processing of revenue, expenses, the general ledger, account maintenance, and data entry
Leads and manages the annual external audit in the US and country audits including preparation, support and coordination, and global consolidation
Supports the grant management process; provides training on the financial aspects of grant management to Country Programs
Updates the Global Finance Manual and Investment Policy annually with specific country requirements in annexes
Analyzes cash flow, cost controls, expenses, and investments; provides guidance and analysis to ensure accuracy and credibility of monthly and quarterly spend estimates from Global Programs
Analyzes financial statements to pinpoint potential weak areas; makes recommendations when appropriate
Benchmarks IT, banking and credit cards, and other providers annually and changes vendors when appropriate; assists Office Management in benchmarking insurance and travel
Updates and revises the Chart of Accounts when needed
Optimizes NetSuite to accurately reflect business needs
Provides training on proper use of NetSuite to all users
Ensures the organization has the proper operational controls as well as administrative and reporting procedures to meet operational and financial targets including the implementation of monthly accruals worldwide
Effectively manages banks, suppliers, and other financial relationships
Reviews major grants and agreements as required in operating countries per signature authority in the Finance Manual
Works closely with all members of the SLT and their departments to ensure alignment between departments, knows where synergies lie, and determines ways to optimize the performance of Water For People
Maintains continuous lines of communication, keeping the CEO informed of all critical issues
Develops key performance indicators and risks for tracking financial progress as part of the Water For People balanced scorecard
Supports the development and continuous enhancement of the Grant Management Program
FINANCIAL RISK AND COMPLIANCE:
Establishes internal control processes to protect fiscal and physical assets of Water For People and ensure compliance with GAAP
Supports risk management with Director of Legal, Compliance, and Risk to enhance and enforce these controls
Creates and implements financial practices and procedures to minimize financial risks, including proactive foreign exchange management, review, and forecasting
Minimizes the number of bank accounts overseas and cash outside the US
Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements in the US, reporting requirements of the other countries where we work, and requirements for donors and granters
Ensures financial record systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards and that document retention policies and practices are in place
Collaborates with the SLT and the Director of Legal, Compliance, and Risk in preparing for internal audits and addressing findings assigned to Finance and IT
Collaborates with the SLT and the Director of Legal, Compliance, and Risk in quarterly risk reviews and updating management of risks assigned to Finance and IT
Assists in the protection of the organization by ensuring it is legally protected by proper and appropriate insurance policies and by ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and policies
Oversees the Director of Technology to develop and lead the digital strategy for Water For People to be a technology-led organization
Ensures that the Director of Technology develops, enables, and supports all technology at Water For People: IT, AV, software, hardware, technology deployed in the field, cloud, etc.
Guides the Director of Technology to utilize technologies focused on both efficiently running the organization internally and enhancing the delivery of Water For People’s programs externally
Ensures that the Global IT team mitigates the risk of technology failures and cyber security to minimize negative impacts and ensure business continuity
Builds and maintains functional IT and AV systems/equipment for optimal performance; ensure all proprietary business information and data are safe and secure
Provides strategic guidance and leadership in the SLT to help guide the organization to higher levels and a positive workplace culture
Inspires employees and models living the values of Water For People for all employees regardless of department
Motivates and leads a high-performing team of global finance, technology/IT staff, and supports the three Regional Finance and Administration Managers in Africa, Latin America, and India (indirect reports)
Sets goals and conducts monthly and annual performance reviews for direct reports; proactively manages performance and meets 1-on-1 biweekly
Holds biweekly global finance team calls and more frequent calls with each region
Oversees Water For People’s outsourced business functions, including the external auditor and outside investment management functions
Fosters a success-oriented, accountable environment within the organization across all departments

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, & SKILLS:
Master’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or equivalent work experience; CPA preferred
At least 12+ years of senior finance and accounting experience, with several years in an international development organization operating in multiple countries and based in the US ideal
A combination of non-profit experience and for-profit experience is highly preferred
Experience managing a finance team as well as IT functions; experience working with other functions such as HR, Legal, Risk, etc. preferred
Experience collaborating with senior leadership, board members, and other key internal and external stakeholder groups
Demonstrated success in building and developing diverse teams
Spanish language skills preferred
Advanced computer proficiencies with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
Knowledgeable in NetSuite preferred
Experience in strategic business planning and execution, contracting, negotiation, and change management
Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations and national financial regulations in the countries where we operate is an asset
Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections
Professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Experience working in low- and middle-income countries and able to quickly gain an understanding of the international development sector and relevant industry benchmarks, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG6: ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to travel 10% to 15% of the time domestically and internationally to low- and middle-income countries, where travel is rugged
