Voices of the Runway for Water

In Chikhaldara, home to many of India’s tribal communities, the terrain is hilly and increasingly dry. Monsoon season brings decent rainfall, but the rocky soil makes restoring and retaining groundwater difficult. Years of discrimination, poverty, and land-use issues have left some struggling with various crises, from health to nutrition to water. Meet a few of the women who live, work and care for their families here.

Their Words

"If we had access to tap water at home we could cook any time, kids could go to school on time, we can go to the fields on time. I’m a health worker – I could go to work on time. But instead, a lot of time gets wasted."

"We go in groups to get water. We cannot go alone – it gets really scary out there. Talking to each other gives us courage."

"Each container takes about thirty minutes to fill. So, it takes two hours for four containers."

"There is no water in the toilets and there is no water in the schools. This is the first time  someone has said, ‘We will shoot a video in your village.'"

Making Runway for Water

The Runway for Water film was created just before the monsoon season in May 2023 in close partnership with the women of Ekjira village, the local Water For People India team, and a film crew from Mumbai.

The aim is to reflect the current realities and obstacles the local women and girls face while collecting water. We shared this reality with audiences tuned into the global Fashion Weeks in Fall 2023, presenting a very different kind of runway for viewers to think about.

"We came to know about the Chikhaldara video project in the office, but where should it be shot? I thought of Ekjira Village and how far women would walk for water."

"These women had never faced the camera before, they had never seen a shooting. We had a small meeting and explained the process to help make them comfortable and confident."

"Just look at the video from the eye of a viewer and see if it excites you, if it moves you, if it actually pushes you to think about the issue. That would be the biggest achievement of the video."

"The film is a testament to the efforts of women and girls across the globe who are walking tirelessly to ensure water is available for their households. With the civil society organizations complementing the work of the national and state governments, we will hopefully ensure that the walk for water will end completely very soon."

"The sun was so hot and it was irritating the women, but they kept going. They thought this shoot would help the village and that the world would know their plight. And it was a great experience."

"The projects of Water For People have empowered many women in these areas. The women learn leadership - they take initiative in the Water User Committees, they participate in meetings. They are happy now that their lives are easier."
