World Water Day

World Water Day (March 22) raises awareness and inspires action to end the water and sanitation crisis. This year, the United Nations' official theme for the day is Water for Peace.

We see how water and sanitation access connects to people's health and well-being, gender equity and empowerment, economic opportunities, and ability to withstand the impacts of climate change. Water is not only a resource to be used and competed over – it is a human right, connected to every aspect of life.

When cooperating on water, we can create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity, and building resilience to shared challenges.

The Numbers

Roughly half of the world's population is experiencing severe water scarcity for at least part of the year.

Only 0.5% of the water on Earth is useable and available freshwater.

More than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders.

Actions You Can Take in Honor of World Water Day:

  • Save water: Take shorter showers and don’t let the tap run when brushing teeth, doing dishes, and preparing food.
  • Eat local: Buy local, seasonal food and look for products made with less water.
  • Break taboos: Talk about the critical connection between toilets, water, and menstruation.
  • Be curious: Find out where your water comes from and how your waste is managed.
  • Protect nature: Plant a tree or create a rain garden – use natural solutions to reduce the risk of flooding and store water.
