Meet Grace: Treating Patients With Clean Water

For Grace, every day at the Nghambi Health Clinic in Mpwapwa District, she balanced risk and necessity – treating patients while lacking access to both running water and proper sanitation.

As a nurse, she saw the consequences of preventable illnesses, vulnerable patients, and frustrating setbacks for families in this area of Tanzania.

Thanks to the collaboration among local government, community leaders, and Water For People supporters like you, Grace’s Health Clinic is no longer a place of uncertainty. Clean water has transformed it into one of healing, not risk. Patients receive treatment with confidence, nurses provide care without fear, and the entire community feels the positive change that comes with improved health.

Water For People supporters have helped make this possible:

The first time preventing disease with running water.
The first time hygiene defines every patient visit.
And the last time treating patients without clean water.

"As a health worker, I am proud because this project has brought major changes, especially in patient care." – Grace Edward

Grace has experienced both the challenges of the past and the progress of today, making her a powerful witness to the positive change in her community’s healthcare environment.

Why does this matter? Water For People’s Everyone Forever model sets us apart.

Everyone Forever means water and sanitation that lasts for every family, clinic, and school. It sounds simple, but it’s actually a big shift in the status quo. In most water and sanitation work, the focus is on short-term wins – building a few wells or toilets without considering how they will keep serving people long into the future.

We used to operate that way until we realized it wasn’t working. When pumps and toilets broke, no one could fix them. This left communities back where they started. So in 2011, we conceptualized the Everyone Forever model. It means what it says – everyone has water that lasts forever.
